No More Tethering! Thank you Raleigh!

The city of Raleigh has finally joined the other animal friendly cities across the United States by passing the Anti-Tethering Law. The law goes into effect tomorrow, July 1st,  and will not allow people to tether their dogs for longer than a three (3) hour period during a 24 hour stretch.

The city will be on the look out for individuals who do not follow the law. I would imagine they will be highly dependent on all of us to report offenders. The violators can be fined up to $100/day and could be charged with a misdemeanor. To report anyone who you think is an offender, you can call the Raleigh police dispatch at (919) 831-6311 to initiate the investigation process.

Do you think the fine is steep enough?

You know, I’m not 100% of the Clayton laws on tethering but my next door neighbors got a pit bull puppy in the spring. He was tethered all the time and as his area was right outside of my master bedroom window, it mostly bothered me that he barked and whined night and day. This went on for more than a month until one day I realized I hadn’t heard the dog in a while and looked out, and he was no longer there. I happened to be working out in the yard and a few kids were playing in the street and one mentioned to the other that the doggie had accidently got hung up and choked to death.

I’ve felt so bad that I didn’t call animal control about the tethering b/c I didn’t feel like being “that” neighbor who tattle tales on her neighbors.
