Snow Cream

If you are up for an activity when the snow rolls in tomorrow evening… here is a recipe to make your own snow cream. Thanks Tony Backmon for sharing!

Old Fashioned Snow Cream

Start with LARGE POT

Mix together:

One can evaporated milk (Pet or Carnation)

 One quart of regular milk

Four eggs

1 ½ teaspoons of vanilla

2 ½ cups of sugar

Heat on low until all mixture is blended together and sugar is melted.

Take off stove…let cool a little.

Add snow and stir until you get the texture you want.

If snow melts, just add more snow!

Mix up all you want, freeze it in plastic bags and when the temperature gets 90 next summer, enjoy AGAIN.  Taste exactly like home made vanilla ice cream.

If you live in Raleigh and have street lights in your neighborhood that are dimly lit or have gone dark all together than you can report them to Progress Energy.

For fast and immediate service, be sure to note the street address nearest the pole and the DIS number that is posted on each street light about eye level from the ground.

Gateway Restaurant – YUM!

gateway beef tips1

I’ve mentioned  Gateway before but I have not written a proper review of one of my all time favorite lunch spots. So here it goes.

Gateway Restaurant is situated in the Gateway Shopping Center on the corner of Capital Blvd and Crabtree Creek Road. The shopping center also houses a few pawn shops and a handful of second hand thrift stores. It’s not exactly the place you would think to find some of the best home cookin’ in Raleigh.

They feature daily specials including beef tips, mac and cheese, fried chicken, meat loaf and chicken pastry. The special comes with a choice of meat and two vegetables.

Most southern style home cooked lunch spots saturate their fixins in butter and grease but Gateway keeps the fatty pound packers down to a minimum keeping your belly full and your cholesterol down. My favorites are the beef tips on Wednesday (I get them on creamed potatoes instead of rice), the chicken pastry, the mac and cheese on Fridays and the hamburger steak which you can get any day of the week.

Gateway serves breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday from 6am until 2pm and on breakfast only on Saturday from 7am until 12pm.

150 Year Ole’ Cannons

If you can see this, then you might need a Flash Player upgrade or you need to install Flash Player if it's missing. Get Flash Player from Adobe.

This past week, I had the opportunity to play with some pretty cool weaponry! From an 150 year old signal cannon from West Pointe to an M16 machine gun!

The signal cannon was tiny but definitely packed a big punch! My friend’s dad was talking about this cannon that he had inherited and we suggested that we pull it out and try to fire it off. While he was talking about the cannon I had this huge pirate ship cannon in my head but when we pulled the little guy out… well let’s just say I have seen cats bigger than this cannon!

Earl Loves The Treadmill

When Willow Bee was a younger dog, he loved to go on walks and would get mad at me if I didn’t take him on one everyday. The only problem was that Willow Bee also hated getting his paws wet so he never wanted to walk in the rain. So on days that it rained, he still got angry about not going on walks… so I taught him how to use the treadmill and he loved it.

When I would tell people that Willow Bee walked on the treadmill, I think they thought I was crazy but he really like it and it kept him in good shape. When I brought Earl home on Sunday, he ran around the house, sniffed everything, found the treadmill, hopped on it and gave me this look like “turn it on!” Over the past few days, Earl keeps jumping on the treadmill and giving me that same look so last night I finally turned it on. It was amazing! He already knew how to use it and started walking and kept looking up at me smiling.

Turkey Fryer and Christmas Tree Fires – Oh My!

This Raleigh Native ventured out to the Cary Fire Department to witness how fast a Christmas Tree can go up in smoke and how you could seriously injure yourself frying a turkey on Thanksgiving!

In just under 2 minutes the Christmas Tree was completely engulfed with flames bursting in height over 15 feet. The turkey was partially frozen and the fryer was over filled with peanut oil which made the turkey flame up and could have potentially burned up your pet, child, or home.

Now I smell like burnt turkey and charbroiled Christmas Tree!

There’s A New Dog in Town

close up of faceAs some of you may know, my favorite puppy in the whole world passed away about two months ago. Willow Bee was a great dog and had so much fun running all over Raleigh and meeting all kinds of new people and fuzzy friends at the Flea Market, the Dog Park, Pet Smart, the Farmers Market and anywhere else he could weasel his way into… like Harris Teeter in Cameron Village… oops… I still apologize to the manager there for that but he really wanted to go in.

A few weeks ago, I received a very nice email from the lady at Tarheel Old English Sheepdog Rescue. She told me that they had two dogs ready for rescue and wanted to know if I wanted to meet them. At first, I thought that it may be too soon but then I felt that I really would enjoy having another dog around and it would be great if I opened up my home to a dog that was in need of a home himself.

And then… yesterday I met Earl. A very young Old English Sheepdog with massive paws, a sweet puppy face, and weighing in at 95 pounds. We were instant friends! I had driven down to Greenville, SC to meet Earl and I really had no idea that I would be able to bring him home yesterday! But here he is! I’m hoping he’s not eating my house while I’m at work but if he is… well… he’s too cute to get mad at.

Earl has had a pretty funny past… for some reason… both of my OES have had interesting histories. Willow Bee lived on a farm in Garner and was turned into Wake County Animal Shelter after defending his best friend, a potbelly pig, from an evil terrier. Earl lost his home when his previous dad decided to do something illegal, got caught and ended up behind bars. Dogs are funny… and I think they could tell some really funny stories if they could only talk.

I got Willow Bee on November 16th, 2003 and I guess it was fate that Earl moved in on November 15, 2009 to help me celebrate Willow Bee’s Birthday.
